Depending on who you ask, you’re likely going to get a different response. Some people simply swear by the fact that they can’t fall asleep without watching TV. Others insist that doing this will keep you awake for much longer than you need to be.

What’s the answer to this controversial issue and who are we to believe? All truth be told, it depends on the person and a few other factors.

TV could actually provide a useful tool for getting yourself off to sleep if done correctly.

With concern to the various ways of using the TV, there are at least three practices that should not be used, which prove ineffective. I will look into each of these and try to come up with possible solutions.

A few will always forget to put the sleep timer on. It is a silly idea not to turn this on; as it will mean that, you have to get up to switch the TV off later on, which will defeat the object entirely.

The change in atmosphere will confuse your body and you may be up for longer as a result. Use a sleep timer, and set it for an hour or two out, as you’ll be putting less pressure on yourself in the event that your timer runs out while you’re still awake.

Also, don’t have it up so loud that the neighbours can hear it, for obvious reasons, but also you shouldn’t have it on too low that you are having trouble to hear it yourself as you will end up lying there awake and ignoring the TV completely so you might as well not have it on at all. Try to find a volume that is somewhere in between the two that your body can relax to.

The next thing is something people always forget, if you decide to watch something that interests you a lot then you will end up distracted from your sleep by the sounds of things that are attracting you too much, your definitely not going to sleep like that.

If the programme ends up being something you really enjoy or are finding particularly interesting then you will have a hard time of drifting off, as it is likely to keep grabbing your attention. You should ideally watch something, which is not too good but just about reasonable viewing.
