Believe it or not, people over the age of 50 are actually happier than younger folks. That’s according to studies conducted by people who study things. And it’s funny because us young folks all seem to think that life ends after middle age. Not so, they say.

One survey in particular compared groups of people based on their sense of well-being. The study compared more than 300,000 people in the US and matched them up based on things like whether they were married or not, or whether they had kids or a job. Then it asked them a bunch of other questions. Well, it turns out that state of mind varies by age.

Things like stress and anger levels went down over the course of time, while things like worries tended to remain the same, at least until the middle age years.

Another emotion, sadness, also went down after age 50, though the patter didn’t change a whole lot. In general, though, happiness tended to decline until the age of 50, after which point it seemed to increase.

The genders seem to be roughly equal when it comes to patterns of happiness over time. But some people seem to have better feelings overall after the age of 50. And some others have different feelings. Women in particular seem to feel that they have been stressed more often and have increased feelings of sadness until the age of 50.

There may be a reason for all the happiness and change, according to the scientists that they say. They also emphasized the amount of overall happiness going up over time.

Researchers indicate that perhaps old folks know better how to keep themselves in check when it comes to the emotions that they have and use. Others who are not so smart, do not, and that is why they fail.

The end point comes down as a thick wall of satisfaction for the old folks. They know where they are and how to be happier for it. They don’t sit around cursing the dark, but rather, they light a candle.

Of course, nothing is so simple. We cannot confirm or deny that happiness starts at 50.

The Most Frequently Professed New Years Vows

Every year, millions of people set out to make a change in their lifestyle that improves them in one form or another. Yes, the new year’s resolution is as popular as it’s ever been in 2010, and many vows have been made to drop old habits of the past and bring in new and improved ones.

There are some smaller changes that people make that may take little effort. Others are a bit more drastic. Let’s take a look at some of the bigger ones that also happen to be harder to keep.

One of the most common resolutions that you’ll see people making is their pledge to quit smoking once the new year rings in. Everyone wants to drop the nicotine habit come January 1st, though it always seems to be much easier said than done.

Many people unfortunately cave into temptations after a week or two, sneaking in one cigarette that ultimately turns into more.

You’ll also see many people pledging to get into the best physical shape possible. This may involve cutting back on bad foods, but it more commonly involves exercising at the gym.

It’s never uncommon for me to see the gym more crowded with some new faces during the first few weeks of the year. I would imagine this comes from that very change people are looking to make in their lives.

Lastly, there’s the commitment that some people make to work less and enjoy themselves more. Wouldn’t we all love to do this?

In a perfect world, we’d all be able to spend less time working. Unfortunately, reality soon settles in. Whether it has to do with bills we couldn’t otherwise pay or the fact that our employers require us to put in extra time, we often find ourselves unable to follow through with this commitment.

While all of these things should be doable at some point, a lot of it all depends on timing. It’s hard to force our will upon ourselves simply because of the time of year. We can accomplish these things at any point in time, and we should never be afraid to make them happen.

Intelligence And Humor

Gelotology is the study of laughter, and as such can involve a consideration of the philosophical bases for humor. But gelotology is mainly concerned with the act of laughing itself, however, and in particular all its psychological and physiological aspects. Though gelotological research has been conducted, its primary motivation is of a therapeutic and practical nature.

For theories of laughter and humor in general, we remain with the philosophers and other such “cultural thinkers.” Whatever humor is, it is generally agreed to be a gift from God, a blessing, for it is tough to imagine a life without having laughter, which is to say a person without a sense of humor. And as hard as it would be to explain just what humor is, it’s even harder to explain why it is – although the two might well be related. For instance, some evolutionary psychologists view humor as a means of sexual selection by females, as an indicator of other traits, for instance intelligence, that do confer obvious survival benefits.

Indeed, intelligence seems somehow intricately linked to a sense of humor – as in the old line about “he who laughs last…thinks slowest.” Humor seems rather complicated, but specific aspects seem universal: An incongruity, a misattribution, even feelings of superiority. All these require a human being (often regarded as the only animal that laughs), a pattern-recognizing sense-making creature.

What makes something funny often goes against our preconceived notions (incongruity), or allows us to make light of serious issues (misattribution), or can even be due to a feeling of advantage (superiority). Thus we laugh if somebody shows up for work wearing a suit and tie with his pants’ zipper unzipped; we find the sight of a man falling out of a building flailing crazily, as if trying to fly, strangely funny; we may even snicker at a homeless panhandler mumbling to himself over a can of beer.

Entertaining Programs In The TV World

There are a growing number of people who think that TV is now a no brainer and all programs are the same, with a lack of taste and morals. Ok, there will be some shows that are purely there for entertainment, but valuable life lessons can still be learn from some. We’ll look at a few of those now.

I’m a great fan of Psych; one of the best shows on the US network. Shawn, the lead character, masquerades as a psychic to solve crimes. The thing is, he is just a guy who has a very sharp wit and a very useful photographic memory.

Everyone loves to play detective, and I am one while this show is on. It really gets you thinking and makes great TV.

Another show I never miss is the ABC show Super Nanny. If you miss it, there are re runs every day on the Style network. Jo Frost is the super nanny who tries to educate parents as to how to handle their unruly kids.

Jo is a British nanny who has had to deal with many horrors in her time and now educates parents how to deal with issues coolly and calmly. No parent is perfect, but she points them in the right direction.

I’m not a great fan of makeover programs but the likes of How do I look? fascinate me. These people mustn’t have mirrors in their homes the way they dress. They are shown what to suits them and how to wear it, and become chic and well dresses people.

I don’t believe in judging a book by its cover, but they so often are. Tips to improve how you look can have a huge bearing on the rest of your life.

There a few shows which I find highly educational, but that are not suitable for kids. These are Law and Order, NCIS and the 3 CSI’s. They are fascinating and vey informative. It gives us an insight into our legal system and deals with sensitive subjects as well as ethics and morals.

Why Wine Bottle Labels Are Important

Most wine drinkers pay little attention to wine bottle labels, as they’re generally more concerned with the wine they’re drinking and the way it tastes.

At the same time, a business perspective lends a lot of insight to the impact that any labels on wine bottles can have. With thousands of wines available in stores, one may be at a loss with respect to what kind of wine to select. This becomes more difficult for someone who doesn’t know the wine world too well.

Labels on wine bottles can give us insight into what it is that we’re drinking. Whether these are accomplished through theming (i.e. national branding), colors that may indicate the subtlety or boldness of a wine’s flavoring, or simply humor to make us smile, there are many ways that labels will often become associated with a bottle of wine.

Let’s take a look at a few of the more interesting wine labels on the market today. With tens of thousands of original wines out there, it would be very hard to cover them all, so surely I’ll miss some good ones.

The first wine bottle with a funny label that comes to mind is “Frog’s Piss” red wine, which comes from a French maker with an obvious sense of humor.

The language itself is enough to get people talking about it, and this form of word of mouth marketing has a huge impact on sales. If you were in a store with friends, you may laugh at the label and then decide to buy it.

The second interesting wine bottle label that I’ll bring to your attention is a Marilyn Monroe line that comes out of Napa Valley, and it’s actually called Marilyn Merlot. Each bottle features a different picture of the legendary actress.

This is a bottle of wine that men surely wouldn’t mind looking at!
