Parents of toddlers who are getting potty trained can make a few easy preparations to take the pitfalls of trying to do it while traveling.
Remember to bring your child’s potty chair with you on the trip. This will help them keep the training routine intact. It is also nice to have when those unexpected bathroom emergencies arise, because all you have to do is pull over and put the potty chair on the seat. Just remember to bring the liners or plastic bags for the potty seat, but it will make cleanup easy.
Don’t forget to also bring extra toilet paper or diaper wipes with you on the trip. Also, use what you normally use at home, because your child will appreciate the consistency.
Bring along things that they are accustomed to, and there will be one less thing to have do deal with. Longer car trips can be hard on everyone involved, and bringing some familiarity from home will help a lot.
Get some disposable training pants for your trip. You will have no trouble choosing from the wide array of different types out there, but they do offer a lot of peace of mind in case an accident does happen.
Try and keep the amount your kid has to drink in the car to a minimum. Don’t let them get dehydrated, but don’t encourage them to have to go to the bathroom every ten minutes either. It’s not always easy to find a quick place to pull over.
Try and expect to periodic stops for breaks along the way at rest areas. You should also bring their potty chair with to the bathroom. Kids will feel more comfortable using their own as opposed to one that they are not familiar with.
Be prepared for your child to have an accident or two in their potty training. Be patient that they will learn along they way. But traveling can be stressful for adults, but especially hard on kids some times.
Once you get to where you are going, remember to encourage your kid and let them know that the did a great job on the way. This reinforcement will enable your child to further master their potty training.
